Election Day – 2010

Election day is nearly here and as we get ready to cast our votes in an election that will help determine the direction America will take in the next few years, I want to share a few random thoughts with you. To say this election is important is a vast understatement. The ramifications of the votes we will cast tomorrow will be far reaching, on the local, state, and federal levels. That is why it is so important that we all cast our votes for the candidates of our choice. To do anything less is an abandonment of our civic duties.

The biggest stories of the day are sure to be related to the Tea Party candidates. Any race that includes such a candidate will be receiving great attention, with one of the biggest races being in Nevada. The Tea Party candidate is Sharon Angle and there is a real possibility that she will defeat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. If she does, it will be a major coup for a party that doesn’t even have a national leader and it is bound to lend even more credibility to the movement.

In our neighboring state of Arkansas, it looks Senator Blanche Lincoln is lagging far behind Republican challenger John Boozman. The latest Rasmussen poll, published yesterday, shows Boozman leading Lincoln, 55%-36%, so it doesn’t look good for Lincoln. Since a major turn around is unlikely this close to the election, the Republicans are nearly guaranteed to pick up her set in the Senate. On the state level, it looks like Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe will defeat Republican challenge Jim Kent.

Here in Oklahoma, we will be electing our first female governor, either Mary Fallin or Jari Askins. The latest polls show Fallin with a commanding lead, but I would caution all of you who are Fallin supporters to not take Askins lightly. She has a history of winning elections that she should have lost; the latest example would be her defeat of Drew Edmondson in the Democratic primary. According to every poll taken before the election, she was going to lose the primary, but she didn’t. Just because Fallin has such a large lead, doesn’t mean we can all sit on our laurels and not go to the polls. Staying here in Oklahoma, it looks like the Republicans are going to do well. Dr. Tom Coburn is well on his way to a 2nd and final term in the U.S. Senate and it looks like the congressional seat being vacated by Mary Fallin will remain in Republican hands. All in all, it looks good in our state. Leave a comment and let me know how it looks in your state.

GO VOTE!! IT’S YOUR CIVIC DUTY!!
